The recipe
A Four-Ingredient Sunday Pot Roast
Vera Neal’s Sunday Pot Roast is built from just four ingredients: a 4- to 6-pound chuck roast, dry onion soup mix, cream of mushroom soup and quartered potatoes. The roast and potatoes are sealed tightly inside heavy-duty foil and baked for four hours.
It is a distinctly old-school oven-roast method—the foil packet traps the soup mixture around the meat and potatoes, creating a self-contained Sunday supper with almost no active cooking once it goes into the oven.
Why it matters
Why This One Is Worth Bringing Back
Some recipes earn their place in the archive because they capture a cooking method as clearly as they capture a meal. This one is a compact example of the convenience-cooking era: packaged soup mix and canned soup do the seasoning and sauce work, while the sealed foil packet handles the long, slow bake.
There are no carrots, herbs or extra vegetables in the source—just roast, potatoes and the soup mixture—which is exactly the kind of specificity worth preserving rather than modernizing away.

Modern kitchen notes
If You're Making It Today
These are modern editorial suggestions, not changes to the archived recipe. When a variation comes directly from the original source, we will say so.
Seal the foil tightly
The source specifically says to bring the foil up and over the roast and roll the edges tightly, leaving the seam about 6 inches above the roast.
Do not invent package sizes
The source lists one package of dry onion soup mix and one can of cream of mushroom soup without giving package or can sizes. Keep those quantities as documented rather than silently assigning modern sizes.
The four-hour bake is part of the source
The printed method gives a fixed 350°F oven and four-hour bake even though the roast may range from 4 to 6 pounds.
