A LIVING RECIPE ARCHIVE

Amish Cooking, Volume 2

Barbara Schwartz · Geneva, Indiana · 1998

This Archive File documents Amish Cooking, Volume 2, associated with Barbara Schwartz of Geneva, Indiana and dated 1998 in the source record. Nostalgic Foodie has reconciled 499 canonical recipes from the collection.

The printed page sometimes leaves questions unanswered

This cookbook is a strong example of why source-fidelity notes matter. Some recipes are highly abbreviated by modern standards, and the archive intentionally preserves those gaps instead of inventing missing details.

Examples from the opening pages include Diabetic Cookies, whose printed directions say only “Stir well. Bake. These are soft cookies,” without a baking temperature or time; Low Calorie Economy Chili, which lists chili powder without an amount; Oatmeal Bread, which gives a 350°F oven but no baking time; and Health Cereal, where raisins are optional but no amount is printed.

Contributor context stays attached

The recipe record also keeps contributor information visible. The opening section includes multiple recipes attributed to Mrs. Henry H. Schwartz, Jr., along with contributions from Mrs. Joe A. Neunschwander and Miss Mary L.L. Schwartz. Those names are part of the archive, not disposable metadata.

Resolved source questions

Two recipes—Black Bottom Banana Bars and Caramel-Apple Bars—were resolved from user-supplied source photographs during final reconciliation. One remaining source quirk is intentionally preserved: the Black Bottom Banana Bars method references cocoa, but the printed ingredient list does not provide a cocoa quantity.

Publishing standard

When recipes from this source move to the public site, the page will distinguish the documented source from any modern editorial guidance. Missing bake times, omitted quantities, and similar source limitations remain visible rather than being quietly “completed” by assumption.
