A LIVING RECIPE ARCHIVE

Favorite Country Recipes

From the Amish Mennonite Kitchens of Tampico, Illinois · 1981

This Archive File documents Favorite Country Recipes, a 1981 collection associated with Amish Mennonite kitchens in Tampico, Illinois. Nostalgic Foodie has reconciled 509 canonical recipe records from the source.

What the opening pages reveal

The first pages alone show how much contributor detail a community cookbook can preserve. Verified recipes include Homemade Bread by Mrs. Ezra Headings, Whole Wheat Bread by Mrs. Herman Hostetler Jr., Zucchini Bread by Mrs. Rex Hostetler and Mrs. Victor Shrock, Banana Quick Bread by Mrs. Joe Hostetler, and Brown Bread by Mrs. Irvin Kropf.

Repeated titles are common—several contributors simply called their recipe “Bread” or “Whole Wheat Bread.” The archive keeps those entries distinct because the contributor, page, ingredient proportions, and method are part of the historical record.

Source fidelity is part of the value

Not every printed recipe is complete by modern standards. Across this collection, some entries have source limitations that need to remain visible. Nostalgic Foodie currently tracks 63 recipes with verified source-incomplete warnings. Those warnings are not treated as errors to be guessed away; they document what the printed page does and does not tell us.

That approach also led to direct repairs during reconciliation. The Buttermilk Bread and Pumpkin Pie recipe cards, for example, were corrected against the scan rather than left as inherited transcription errors.

Archive status

How recipes will be published

The collection is not being pushed live all at once. Public pages are selected and enriched with provenance, source notes, editorial context, and imagery so that each page functions as more than a transcription of the printed recipe.
